ILLUSTRATION
For my final project in screenprinting, we were given free rein to do whatever we want. The only requirement was that we screenprint our final on three different substrates.
The underlying concept behind this project was a fictional band I created with my friend, ANTENNA. From the beginning, I knew I wanted to create band t-shirts, as well as risograph illustrations to accompany them. The idea behind the risographs were that they would depictions of the two band members wearing the clothes, as if to advertise both the apparel and the band itself.
For ANTENNA’s logo, I was primarily inspired by contemporary culture and design. I looked at acid graphics, because I was entranced by the way people were able to abstract type in a way that was practically illegible, something almost subversive to what is considered “good” design. My initial explorations tried to channel acid, but I wasn’t happy with how they were turning out. However, I still wanted to include abstracted letterforms in my design and I also played with how the type was set.
I created two logos for antenna. The first employs experimental type and stacking of the letterforms. It was designed to fill a large amount of space. i created the second version of the logo to be more standard and clean. I feel that the second logo is able to stand by itself in smaller applications as well.
To accompany my screenprinted apparel, I illustrated the band members wearing the clothes to advertise both the designs and the band itself. I converted my illustrations into a halftone, and screenprinted them with ANTENNA’s logo in different ways on top to finish my risograph prints.
